Educational Tools in the Classroom: Socrative

I consider myself reasonably experienced regarding technology use in the classroom. While I still have a lot to learn, I have found that there are a few tech tools have provided me with different, but beneficial, uses for my mathematics classroom.

2) Socrative / Socrative App

Previously, I had been using the Smart Notebook clickers in my classroom to do in class diagnostic actvities. I often took the first few minutes handing out clickers, setting up my Smart Response file, and getting the students connected. Recently, I made the switch to socrative, which has streamlined what I am doing in the classroom.

Socrative is a student response system that is very used friendly, and can run on smartphones, tablets, or laptops, so it can work in a bring your own device classroom.Further to this, unlike the Smart Response clickers and software, Socrative is entirely free, as long as the students have a web enabled device.

I have used Socrative to create individual questions (open response, multiple choice, etc), quizzes, and surveys. It is particularly easy to do, and can be done straight from your tablet or from the Socrative website. As well, recently, image integration has been added to Socrative, making it very similar to the Smart Response system.

I find that students have really bitten in to Socrative because it is simple, but it also gives them an excuse to occasionally have their phone/tablet out in class, which they can appreciate. While it is fundamentally not much different than the Smart Response clickers, I find that it is easier to set up and create content that can be used to assess or provide diagnostic information on student learning. It has definitely been a useful tool for me in my classroom.

  1. Here, you not only share an assessment tool but share a bit about why you are flexible and understanding of allowing devices in the classroom. You stress the importance of using a tool constructively as a way of teaching students to use devices responsibly. Great example. Thanks.
